  1. I am blown away at the stats of the school! I wonder about the culture building that took place in order to get the level of buy-in I saw from the students today. They seemed to know all about the pillars and the mission and vision of the school. I am excited to learn more about this and see how I can bring the same "mojo" to my school.

    1. Henry - I responded to this post right away and my comment did not get published. Hopefully my second response will still include the "fabulousness" of my first one! :)
I think there are two amazing reasons for the "buy-in" of students, as you put it. 1. Students WANT to come here - they have to apply! It is an honor to be chosen. 2. The AMAZING way school is started - camp. Camps are wonderful for bringing people together with a shared experience. I'd love to start my year off with a "new team" - and students are a team - at a camp!! Very impacting and cool.

  2. While thinking about all the assignments coming, especially my completion of the Philosophy of Education, I really enjoyed the Pillars discussed by SAMI students which included Empathy, Community, Thinking, Balance and Adventure. These are important characteristics needed by all members of society. I will make sure to include these in my final draft of my philosophy. When it comes to the work being done daily as an intern and teacher (and member of a family), it can become overwhelming! I feel that I have a great grasp on certain elements, but am struggling with finding good times to take off to perform intern duties. This is a priority for me to sit down and review the Sunrise calendar and my curricular calendar to find times that will have the least impact on my students. I have found that the reflection is a great place for me to process parts of my day and attempt to set plans that I can carry out in the future. It has been a wonderful, but busy start to a great school year.

    1. I agree with the pillars! What a great way to frame an educational philosophy. With trying to juggle everything, balance might be a pillar we can all practice!

    2. I am also a big fan of the pillars and think this would be beneficial to use in a school or district office environment, grounding the work tied to the vision statement. :)

  3. I love, love, love Gabe! The "empathy" pillar was my favorite too. Reminds me a lot of my Evergreen Geoduck days! Renee you are an amazing leader. Very impressed with the entire night. It was fun talking to Kassie and Renee at dinner. The Cod burger was bomb! Tip o' the Spear!

  5. Thank you Renee for starting the intern seminar off to a great start! What a beautiful setting...and more importantly, the inspiration that this place brings to the SAMI students every day! Most inspiring was the voice of the students...loved hearing how the culture of the school brought meaning and connection to the learning. Student voice is imperative to inform our work! Keep up the good work Renee!

    1. Agreed! It comes as no surprise, however, that Renee would be the one to put forth the Aristotelian forms in her seminar--a fantastic way to set the bar high. My juices are really flowing now in terms of what I am thinking of doing here at my little corner of the district.

  6. I am so glad I was able to get a glimpse into the daily walk of a SAMI student. WOW - I would have LOVED having a classroom not confined by four walls . . . having the freedom to live out learning instead of just "set and get". Way to go for showcasing this innovative school. THANK YOU very much. I especially appreciated the blend of creativity with technical learning - way to go!!

  7. What a fantastic first seminar. Renee--you are the “hostess with the mostest!” THANK YOU! The words of the SAMI students were very powerful. I got a real sense of the passion for SAMI that is shared by all, students and administration alike, who are a part of this amazing and unique program. I also really appreciated the fact that Lynne Rosellini and Lisa Nolan found time in their busy schedules to come and speak to us. All of us are putting in SOOOOOO much time and hard work to make sure that we are prepared to be an administrator. It was nice to be told by representatives of the third largest district in the state that there ARE jobs out there and that they are looking for people like US!

  9. Being a mom of two boys who were able to participate in a choice elementary program, I know first hand the benefit of a program where each students interests and styles are honored. The experiences last a life time. I was so impressed with the students who presented the pillars and loved the community partnerships and empathy pillars. As I continue on this journey, those will be two of my main ideas and area of focus. Thanks so much Renee for highlighting this amazing program!

  10. Thank you all for visiting SAMI and for the positive feedback above. It was extremely enjoyable to plan the first seminar. My advice to all would be to find the true vision and mission of your school. If I could do anything differently for the seminar, I would have wanted more students to interact in small groups to share their reasons for seeking out SAMI. Grant, Gabe and Riley were terrific! I am extremely grateful to Dr. Baxter, Lynne Rosselini, Lisa Noland and Dr. Malone for coming as well. Looking forward to the next seminar.
