Self Inventory

If candidates properly select the Puyallup campus, Dr. Malone will receive a copy of their results, which he will forward to the candidates.

Candidates will receive a version of this message at the end of the process but some candidates may find that difficult to use for their records.

Log vs. Reflection

From your handbook Page 10:

Candidates should maintain both a time log (Appendix N) and a reflective journal to document their internship experiences.  The time log should be maintained on a weekly basis, recording the hours spent on internship-related activities and indicating which standards apply. The journal is expected to show evidence of reflection on, and analysis of, internship activities in relationship to the program standards. 

Journal entries highlight the progress and changes in the interns thinking about a subject or a topic, or about the learning journey in which the intern is engaged.

Journal entries should include:

·       Describe the events/activities and your role in the experience

·       Interpret and evaluate the events/activities from your perspective- What do you think about it now? How does it relate to other things that you know? What are your new insights, connections with other learning, take-aways and conclusions?

·       Reflect on how this information will be useful to you- What questions do you have? Have you changed how you think about the situation? Where do you go from here?

       Just added!  As a result of the site review we are preparing for with our programs, I am going to add a fourth item as to your reflections.  This area is to discuss how your work/leadership/experiences is contributing to student learning.   We also want you to include evidence to support this item.  When we meet on the 8th we will discuss this in greater detail and identify examples of possible evidence.

Our certification program requires a minimum of 540 hours of internship-related activities for completion of the program.  The most important criterion for evaluating the internship is the demonstration of satisfactory performance related to each of the standards.  

You will submit your Journal entry bi-weekly (every two weeks) to your University Supervisor and to Dr. Malone starting now; for a total of 16 submission over the course of the year.  It should look something like this:   

1st Semester 8 Submissions

• 1 submission mid-Aug (now)
• 2 each month Sept, Oct and Nov.  (around the 1st & 15th)
• 1 submission mid-Dec 

2nd Semester 8 Submissions

• 2 each month Jan, Feb, Mar, April  (around the 1st & 15th)

Last Steps to Certification

Student Directions:

Turn in your completed portfolio hard copy notebook with all completed projects and papers organized in the order of Appendix L for grading to your university supervisor before May 1. Samples in Dropbox

In addition, turn in the following items to Dr. Malone by May 5:

1) Identical electronic copy of ALL documents in your portfolio described above on a jump drive with your name on it.

2) A separate and additional hard copy of the completed PGP (Appendix Q) A separate and additional hard copy of your Signed completion letter from your supervising principal on school letterhead (see examples in Dropbox)

3) A separate and additional hard copy of your Completed final evaluation completed and signed by your principal (Appendix K). Remind your principal that the highest score is a 2.

In addition, you'll need to follow directions and complete paperwork from Jennifer Gallagher (j.gallagher@wsu.edu) to apply for your principal certificate to OSPI.  She'll communicate with each of you directly.  

Nate and Alyssa will have additional paperwork and communication with Jennifer for their Masters Degree.

Finally, mark your calendar for our final celebration on evening of May 9th at the Karshner Center!  Bring your family and invite your supervisor!  Professional Family portraits will be taken.  More details soon.
