  4. Of the many take-aways at the recent intern seminar, the activity about forming new habits has really got me thinking! As a leader, our work involves forming new habits and mindsets aligned with our core belief and the high expectations we hold for ourselves, staff and students.
The two major standard projects I will be writing are focused on Standard 2B and Standard 3. For standard 2B, I will be participating with school teams assessing the instructional program and calibrating our work around staff professional growth and evaluation. The major project for standard 3 includes the work around a department-wide common budgeting process in which I have led the training and facilitation towards the common budget tool.

  5. As I am working in a building working to integrate the arts, seeing the Dancing Classroom was a great chance to see how having an activity such as this really motivates students to come to school so they can participate. It was great to see the kids working together. The two projects I will be working on are: Standard 1-CSIP process with data to create our school data wall and RTI. I will be meeting with teams weekly guiding their conversations around student data and building teacher leadership to find leads for these teams. Standard 2 working with new teachers through professional development that will help them increase their instruction in their classrooms. As the major piece of this I will be assisting ateacher in developing a plan for instructional improvement that will assist in building culture of learning. For this process, I will be working closely with another teacher as we offer support in the classroom.

    1. I am eager to see your school's data wall. Is there a data wall presently?

    2. Yes, it is a work in progress. Starting slow to go fast with just reading goals and current proficiency levels up. Math and progress coming soon.....

  7. I LOVE THAT THE PERFORMING ARTS ARE INTEGRATED JULIE! Thanks for sharing an incredible best practice that is working at Wildwood. My takeaway last evening included a post-seminar discussion with Ben and Glenn regarding the question, "What is the #1 quality central staff is looking for in a principal candidate?"

I will be completing my projects for Standard I and Standard III before Winter Break. In promoting the vision of learning at SAMI, I led the planning and facilitating of our first three days of school at the all school retreat at Black Lake. This included staff and parent training days beforehand around our school mission and vision including a framework for instructional blocks to support our SIP goals in reading, math and 9th grade academic achievement. Standard III includes a project promoting school safety. I have updated and created a new school emergency plan including a crisis folder for each staff member. The staff now have checklists and procedures in the event of various emergency situations. I manage the monthly safety drills and ensure district reports are completed by the SRO. This was not in place last year.

    1. Renee, sounds like you were really "value added" to the school safety efforts at SAMI! That is so awesome!

    2. Renee I love this idea of the retreat prior to the start of the year! What a great community building activity. Your school amazes me!

  8. Thanks everyone for coming last night to our Dancing Classroom and intern meeting! Students were so excited to share what they're doing with you and it was a proud moment for their parents as well. Here is what I am focusing on-I plan to continue working on Standard 1 by working with all staff on providing data for our RTI meetings. I have also begun working with my 3rd grade and Kindergarten teams on developing data walls to track and improve students progress. I want to encourage other grade levels to participate. Then, I will continue working on Standard 3, helping staff with the implementation of our classroom budget system. I sent out a survey asking thoughts and ideas on how to improve it and have acted on their suggestions. I will continue to “check in”, with staff and support them in ensuring management of our resources.

    1. Julie, I think the survey piece for your standard 3 is a great way to inform your work and development in your project area! Kudos!

  9. First, thank you Julie for hosting. My favorite take-away was the Dancing Classroom. We have a huge amount of students who participate in our Drill Team, but it is an activity that is held after school, so not every student has access. Having an entire grade level integrate dance into their day is fantastic! What a great way to meet the needs of our students.

For my projects, my focus for Standard 1 is the work I have done using the Indistar tool to help recreate the culture and vision of our school. This work began last year and the year before so I am not sure if all the information will count. Standard 2: Creating a Data culture with new tools for teachers to use for the intervention information and modifying curriculum. Standard 3: Either recess plan or master schedule. Good Luck Everyone! 

  10. Awesome job Julie. The Dancing Class performance was fantastic. Those kids are far more coordinated then me! I love how Wildwood has a clear mission and vision and uses common "kid friendly" language to be able to articulate that vision to the students. I also love how the Wildcat pledge is a daily routine. Great idea.

Project wise for me I will be finishing Standard 3 (master schedule), and 2A/2B (mentoring new teachers and observations) by winter break. I want to get my Standard 1 (Tier 1 grade level RTI meetings), and Standard 5 (community circles) up and rolling before break. I am going to wait until Amy's class to start my Standard 4 project because she will probably have some really cool ideas! I am still having problems figuring out something for Standard 6. There is ALOT to do...it is reassuring to know that I am not alone in this process. If it were not for the support of this group and the relentless positive attitude of Glenn I would be on the verge of a mental breakdown!

  11. I loved the Dancing Classroom. What a cool thing to do for kids. Henry and I were watching the students dancing and reminiscing of when we were at Fruitland Elementary.
Julie - You did a great job. You have a that Aloha Spirit - always smiling and positive. You are going to be an amazing Principal.
My projects are coming along. I will get 3 done by the break.
    Standard 1 - CSIP/mentoring teachers
Standard 2 - WA Aim and Curriculum Training
Standard 3 - Sub Orientations student presentations
Standard 4 - Project Unify Special Olympics Jr. High Basketball league
    Standard 5 - Still thinking...
Standard 6 - WEC testify and follow up

    1. Ben, we should get together and share some ideas. Based on our conversations, I think that we have a lot of similarly awesome ideas. I also want to pick your brain a little bit on your project ideas, and I think I can give you some ideas for St. 5.

  12. My standard 1 and 2 projects are kind of blending together a little bit here.

Standard 1: Building a shared vision of learning with regard to literacy instruction in classrooms both building and district-wide. For this, I have been working to get teachers to internalize the ideology that they are all literacy instructors. I have led development sessions both at the school and district level, and I have used CCSS and the SBAC as resources to show teachers WHY they need to rethink their work. I have also led Walker in making a strategic 8.1 SMART goal to better engage kids in literacy in all subjects.

For project 2, I am going to be working with teachers individually on working toward the literacy goal. For this, I will conduct formal observations of teachers as they work with literacy in their curricula. Also, I will be collecting data and student work to show that this work is having an impact on student learning and performance. Some of the evidence from Standard 1 might need to be included for Standard 2, though. For example, I made an assessment for 8.1 as well as a rubric. That seems to fit into both categories.

I have lots of other ideas floating around for the others, but my big goal is to bang these out with fidelity before the break.

  13. I loved the idea of the dancing class. Giving a student a land line - an anchor - something to grasp - and growing from there is so important for success to a large population of our students. I love the idea of incorporating the dancing in the instructional day, as students will automatically be exposed, taught, and instructed without having to make a hard choice between "fun" and "study". It is automatic, and gets rid of the first difficult boundary.

For standard 3: I organized our Lahar evacuation with our safety committee this year. Lots of involvement, as our school has the furthest to go in the valley to get to safe ground.

For standard 4: I am the weekly author of our staff bulletin, the main source of communication between our staff. I am also ghost writing for Arturo on our Tiger Tribune - a biweekly note to our students and their parents. GREAT first line of communication.
